About Organ Trafficking

Trafficking for the purposes of "removal of organs" is identified as a type of trafficking under the UN Trafficking Protocol definition. Organ trafficking occurs when a third party recruits, transports, transfers, harbours or receives a person, using threats (or use) of force, coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, or abuse of authority or a position of vulnerability for the purposes of removing that persons organ/s. Where children are concerned, there is no need to prove force, fraut or coercion. Organ trafficking usually involves kidneys, because removal of all other organs requires "donor" to be killed, which is rare (GTZ 2004).

Despite recent attention being paid to human trafficking by various government authorities and non profit organizations, there is littleunderstanding about the scale and scope of the illicit trade.

Organ trafficking is one of the more invisible forms of trafficking today. Only a small handful are critically looking at the issue, and its the goal of Organ Monitor to raise awareness about the types of organ trafficking taking place around the globe, and where. We can use your help in merely submitting reports about cases you hear about in the news. By doing so, we hope that the anti-trafficking movement will be able to extend more successful intervention activities against it.

This project is brought to you by volunteers at Survivors Connect, an organization dedicated to utilizing innovative technologies to advance the anti-human trafficking movement.

To Learn more about great organizations combating the illegal organ trade, check out:

Organ Watch, University of California, Berkeley: http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/biotech/organswatch/

Coalition for Organ-Failure Solutions (COFS): http://www.cofs.org/

Charity Association for the Support of Kidney Patients (CASKP):

Charity Foundation for Special Diseases (CFSD):
